I bought a 03 fatboy and it has a 95" big bore kit on it. What does that actually replace?
Best Answer A big bore kit in engine terms usually means the cylinders have been over bored to a certain width beyond the regular specifications. The big bore kit is most likely a wider piston and the accompanying hardware to match.
A 2005 Harley Road King, I had it upgraded from 83 to 95 cubic inches, with an Edelborck high performance kit, different cams, different pistons, bigger bore, and heads that give higher performance (higher compression). The performance got quite a bit better. Are there companies that can give even better performance (turbocharging), without increasing the displacement even more? It could be a big project, but I came into even more money, and could afford it.
Best Answer HD's JUNK, WEAK crankshafts..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_ABdzSrge0 Max runout is .0005" = half a thousandth.....the above bike has 4800 miles and crank is shot!!!! The stock crankshaft can NOT handle the added pressure of forced induction without modifications, even a new, stroker crank will need to be "fixed" before it will be accetable for forced induction.HD went the CHEAP route with the Twin Cam engine and started making their cranks pressed together with straight pins instead of bolted together with tapered and keyed pins. Under high performance apps, the cranks are notorious for twisting, coming out of round and bending the pinion shafts. If you had done a little more research, you would have found that Edelbrock's engine kits are not all they are cracked up to be. There are MUCH better companies that have much more reliability, delver higher power figures and are cheaper. Revolution Performance and T-Man are 2 of the best companies out there. Revolution has a bolt-on 98" using nikasil plated cylinders (STATE OF THE ART) that run about 25 degrees cooler than any other cylinder on the market. Their head porting service is outstanding. Go to Revolutions website and read up on their cylinders, headwork and CRANK WELDING services. I did a customers bike last year, with Rev's 98' cylinders, stage 2 heads, crank svc, and a set of bolt in Woods with a Feuling cam plate and oil pump...it delvered a little over 115hp and almost the same on torque. http://revperf.com/ http://www.revperf.com/Tech/OEMcompare.html For some GERAT info go to the technical menu, for the drop down, then click on and watch their podcasts!!!!! One more note, you say its a 2005, how many miles are on it? Google this..."harley cam chain tensioner failures"...this is a MAJOR issue affecting ALL 99-06 TC88 engines. When they fail, not if, but when (15-40k miles), EVERYTHING in the cam chest MUST be replaced. It will destroy the cams, cam plate, oil pump, lifters, and sometimes the crankshaft..... Upgrade it COMPLETELY to the 07-up hydraulic chain drive and new style oil pump using Andrews or Woods "conversion" cam kits. The new style oil pump will also give higher pressure, better scavenging , reduce oil puking from breathers and run the engine cooler. Also, if you have a rubbermount "A" motor...BE SURE to install an S&S Reed Valve Breather. HD does make a CHEAP hydraulic upgrade kit...BUT it is CHEAP and half-a$$ED...the problem is not only the tensioners, but a bad chain design that cuts away material from the cam gears. This kit upgrades the outer chain, but still uses the original cams and inner chain. What good is it to replace the plate, oil pump, outer chain and tensioners if you have worn out cam gears?....none....they will just accelerate the wear so this will happen all over again, even faster than the first time.
